Wield Your Sword – Like My Dad, Hubert!!

And take the helmet of salvation and the sword that the Spirit wields, which is the Word of God. (Eph 6:17)

Hey Neighbor!

Today I am once again, remembering my Dad on The CareBiBleStudy Blog.

Some years ago, I did a blog series on Putting on The Whole Armor of God., and each day I selected one of my family members whose life best reflected the proper use of each of the Articles of Armor, i.e. the belt of truth, breastplate of righteousness, Shoes of peace, Shield of faith, the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the spirit and prayer.

I chose my Sword-Wielding Dad to Carry The Sword of The Spirit!!

Here’s More About My Dad, Hubert!!

*****************************************

Today We will Be Preparing to Carry The Sword of the Spirit into Battle, and as We come to a close of our Study on ‘The Whole Armor of God,’
I wanted to Share with You How my ‘bible-toting’ Father, Hubert Horton, Jr., walked before The Lord, Wielding his Sword of The Spirit- The Word of God – His Bible.

My Father was a Great, ‘Faith-Full’
man. He was peaceful and kind and for some reason, I watched him intently. I realize now, that I was awed by his Faith-Walk.

He loved Jesus and He loved to read his bible.
It was the the first thing he did in the morning…He grabbed his bible and his cigarettes and spent forever in the bathroom…reading and smoking!! Lol

He was our alarm clock…so after he was done with his ‘bathroom bible study,’ he would wake us up to get ready for school.

He would always make my lunch for school. I loved bacon…and I still do…so as he was making my bacon sandwich, he was having his daily ‘kitchen bible study. ‘

He would have his radio playing, as he listened to the different radio preachers…sitting with his bible open at the kitchen table, with a cup of tea. He would sit there so peacefully, reading his bible, smoking his cigarettes, until it was time for him to take us to school.

Of Course, the bible study continued in the car, as he listened to more radio preachers and as he played, what I call ‘country gospel,’ during the short ride to school.

Back then, I don’t recall him leaving the house carrying his bible, but later in his life…he carried his bible with him EVERYWHERE he went.

My siblings and I were grown, by then…and at that time…we could not grasp the spiritual significance of what he was doing.

We were embarrassed because…this was not just Sunday morning – ‘bible-toting’ that Daddy was practicing. This was everyday…out-in-public and we were concerned that someone, who we knew, might see him carrying his bible and say that he was ‘Crazy.’

We realized that there was no way we would be able to convince him to leave his bible at home, so we bought him a book-bag so that he could still carry his bible around…but at least it was hidden.

But Daddy was not Ashamed of the Gospel of Jesus Christ…and he knew that his bible was his Sword of the Spirit…and he was ‘Faith-Full’ to Carry it…Read It…and Wield it!!

Although My siblings and I thought my daddy was tripping and considered his ‘bible-toting’ to be extreme, He wasn’t crazy, he knew exactly what he was doing…

He knew that he was actually
Sword-Wielding!!

You See…My Dad was a Schizophrenic, and he knew that if he didn’t fill himself up with the Word of God and keep the Belt of Truth strapped tightly around his waist, those schizophrenic voices from Hell, would come back…lying to him…confusing him…stealing his family, his peace, and most importantly, his sanity.

He was diligent and dutiful to take his meds, but he knew he was in a Spiritual Battle for His mind…so he could not afford to give the devil any room, nor another opportunity to establish a stronghold over him.

You see, while he was in his Bible study, he jad read 2 Corinthians 10:5

-[Inasmuch as we] refute arguments and theories and reasonings and every proud and lofty thing that sets itself up against the [true] knowledge of God; and we lead every thought and purpose away captive into the obedience of Christ (the Messiah, the Anointed One-

So he knew how to wield his sword and use The Word to cut-down the strongholds that had once overtaken him…with his Sword!!

When Satan slithered in, telling his best lies…Daddy compared the lies of Satan – to the Truth he learned in God’s Word, which he had since hidden in his heart (not in a book bag)…and when the TRUTH of God’s Word prevailed over the devil’s lies…(and It ALWAYS does)…Daddy slashed those lies down!!

So when the devil came…lifting up and exalting schizophrenia, and depression… trying to deceive him and convince him that mental illness was greater than the One True, Living God…Who My Daddy knew so well…because he had walked with Him, and talked with Him daily in prayer and study…Daddy rejected and refuted those lies…even from the father of all lies!!

Daddy refused to Fall Back!!

Instead, he cast down those spirits of schizophrenia and depression…caged them up…chained them up…and he dragged them away captive to Jesus, his Reigning King… where these wicked spirits were forced to behave, bow-down, and submit to The Name and Authority Of Jesus!!

So…For Daddy, the Sword of the Spirit was his Daily Weapon…and We too, must be ‘Faith-full’ and diligent to Read and Study God’s Word daily…so that We are armed and ready to Wield Our Sword, with skill and ease!!

After All…There is a Real, Spiritual War going on!!

  1. Indeed!this is definitely an urgent prayer point on believer’s list…for parents to come into their assignment…you see , at school’s we see the deterioration of these roles and the impact on society

  2. AAMEN and Thank You! Yes!! Our godly parental assignment must supersede our carnal desires, when God blesses the womb. We have a huge responsibility to mold ‘God’s sons and daughters’ in this world…and we are power-less without the Holy Spirit’s power!! Praise God For Jesus

  3. AAMEN, Anneta! I am also a Joyce Meyer Fan!! I used to attend her conferences in St. Louis annually!!
I still use my pink, leather bound Bible that I bough at my first JMM conference! And yes…battlefield of the mind should be a christians foundational truth pamphlet…it is so powerful!!
What a blessing Joyce has been to me and what a story!! The Lord has truly transformed her life from a desperate young woman with a heart for God into a Power House For God’s Word!! I am more than blessed just to be compared to Joyce! I met her once in a clothing store that I worked in…she just walked right in- all alone. I was so awed by God…He knew I needed to meet her! 😎

  4. AAMEN and Praise The Lord, Eva!! My Dad was actively entangled in spiritual warfare for his very life!! I am so blessed to have had him as a ‘warrior’ example and a conquerer for myself and my children. Thanks for Reading and Commenting Eva! Love You Girl💕

  5. What an amazing story of redemption. Your story reminds me of Joyce Meyers story about her early life as a Christian when she had bible studies in her house. She was wearing shorts and smoked while sitting ok cardboard and taught from the bible. God meets us where we are and your father understood well the battle he was up against and how to use the word to fight. Joyce Meyers also wrote a book about the Battlefield of the mind. Not even intended on advertising her ministry, but she came to mind when I read your blog. You are blessed. 🙏🏾

  6. Oh My! I love that movie also! I was all in with the main character…what a surprise to learn that he was battling schizophrenia! You could have bought me with a penny! My dad wanted to live in victory- he took his meds to maintain, but he leaned and relied on ‘the sword’ to fight the daily ‘spiritual’ battles!! He was more than a conqueror through Jesus Christ!

  7. One of my favorite movies is “A Beautiful Mind”, a very visual reality of what this looks like.
No comparison can stand up to the war your daddy won.
It’s an amazing testimony, that you got to witness watching your father claim his victories.
Surely the struggle is that kind of real to so many believers, and so many of them just lay there and take it.
It would be an amazing powerful tool to be able to broadcast this testimony to the entire church.
Warriors like your dad lead the way, and praise God for the battle winner that he was.
It gives you and all of us so much to look forward to, knowing that the war is won
    And…what a weapon.

    Hallelujah!!!
